OUR STORY
The Islamic Chaplaincy of New Jersey was established in 2015, born from the vision of approximately 30 families who were inspired by the teachings and sermons of Dr. Mohammed I Ahmed. These families sought to create a unique religious organization that would operate beyond the constraints of traditional mosque structures, free from board politics and religious discrimination. They envisioned a space that embraced diversity in Islamic practice and welcomed individuals at various stages of their spiritual journey.
Recognizing the diverse needs of the Muslim community, the founders of the Islamic Chaplaincy aimed to provide comprehensive religious services that extended beyond the physical confines of a mosque. They were determined to address the spiritual and emotional needs of Muslims who might not feel comfortable in a conventional mosque setting. By conducting religious services in private homes, the Islamic Chaplaincy created an inclusive environment that encouraged participation from those who were hesitant to attend mosque-based gatherings. This approach has proven to be an effective tool for Dawah, inviting individuals to explore their faith without fear of judgment.
The Islamic Chaplaincy also recognized the importance of serving the broader community through essential outreach services. The organization prioritized the spiritual needs of Muslim patients in hospitals and inmates in prisons, areas often overlooked by traditional Islamic centers. Inspired by the prophetic tradition of visiting the sick and the Quranic teachings on compassion and support, the Chaplaincy established a robust Prison and Hospital Ministry. This program provides spiritual guidance, religious instruction, and emotional support to those who may otherwise be neglected.
In addition to its religious services, the Islamic Chaplaincy focuses on channeling religious obligatory and voluntary charity to support local and international causes. Through its DBA, Be A Mercy Foundation, the organization ensures that charity contributions are organized, impactful, and transparent. This approach empowers donors to witness the meaningful impact of their generosity, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
Despite not owning a specific building designated as a mosque, the Islamic Chaplaincy operates as a recognized house of worship under IRS guidelines. It conducts various religious activities across multiple locations, including homes and partner mosques throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This flexibility allows the Chaplaincy to reach a wider audience and address the unique needs of the Muslim community.
As of January 1, 2024, the Islamic Chaplaincy has conducted over 200 marriage ceremonies and assisted in more than 100 funerals, exemplifying its commitment to serving the community through life’s significant moments. The Chaplaincy continues to collaborate with real estate experts to secure a permanent location that will serve as its second home, further enhancing its ability to provide comprehensive religious and community services.
Through its dedication to faith, compassion, and service, the Islamic Chaplaincy of New Jersey stands as a beacon of hope and support for the Muslim Ummah locally and globally. Its story is one of innovation, inclusivity, and unwavering commitment to the principles of Islam, guiding individuals and communities toward a brighter future.
